The ever-vaunted silent majority is definitely real—but if they’re not engaged, the only feedback we can use from them is metrics.

Metrics are totally important. Well-designed metrics let you answer questions in a data-driven way that’s more objective than subjective. But metrics don’t give you the why, and you as the developer have to know to ask the question in the first place.

So raw feedback from your engaged users? It’s gold, generally regardless of the ultimate goal of said users (assuming they’re not just there to troll, anyhow).

Also, “more powerful compared to other players” in an offline game isn’t really useful. Certainly, motivations are different depending on the context of the game. If I were to put my cynic hat on, more powerful in a meta sense where having the ear of the developer feels good, perhaps, but at the same time, as mentioned, there’s a symbiotic effect—both players and developers benefit.Talarianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17684944568000522986noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2814591084344141656.post-77259930389130958502018-02-22T05:23:57.761-08:002018-02-22T05:23:57.761-08:00I believe being biased towards longstanding commun...I believe being biased towards longstanding community members is the biggest fail a developer can do. "Longstanding community members" are rent-seeking, self-serving nerds who are often into some form of making money off the dev's work (RMT-ers, streamers ...). Their goal isn't to make the game better, it's to make themselves more powerful compared to other players. Their deep understanding of the game helps them figure out suggestions that are harmless looking enough to be implemented, but create huge power gain for them and a huge damage to the other players. Most players are not engaged with the community, just want to play. They have no voice and their interests aren't represented in forum talk. But they are paying 90% of the dev's income.Gevlonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07072766785893313616noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2814591084344141656.post-13664646196669104352018-02-21T19:29:23.851-08:002018-02-21T19:29:23.851-08:00Yup, nice catch! So you take the defender's armor, compute an armor factor, and multiply. Right? The armor factor is <1. That's ok, it does reduce damage. But as armor increases, the factor goes from 0 to 1... That's odd. The more armor, the less damage reduction? Maybe the formula should be 1-armorfactor ?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2814591084344141656.post-76417878614776686882018-02-01T14:29:53.291-08:002018-02-01T14:29:53.291-08:00Great work! At the moment you have damage = Power * ArmorFacor * CritFactor... but the graph of ArmorFactor shows an increasing value as armor increases, meaning damage would increase with armor - which is not right... And for the static value of 1040 I can't get it to match my observed power/armor/damage values (even inverted)... is there something wrong in this equation? Is the 1040 value fixed for everyone, or is there something else at play here (power or difference in power-armor)?
Also, I observe that there are 4 different damage values, White, Red and two Yellow... the Red and higher yellow values seem to work off the block stat (more block equals more white damage than red damage, and lower crit value)... So clearly there is some sort of 10% armour penetration at play here as well? Thanks for the graphs and discussion though, it is helpful other than these questions.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12170443455285155225noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2814591084344141656.post-82443170696144107792016-12-13T21:40:00.551-08:002016-12-13T21:40:00.551-08:00I think the "flaw" in your analogy is th...I think the "flaw" in your analogy is that each Civ is led by an immortal leader. The Germany of 1945 is nothing like the Germany of 2016...but in Civ VI the same Holy Roman Emperor Barbossa or whatever is the leader in both cases.

Basically, you said it yourself here:

"By 2000 BC I had wiped America off the face of the planet because I mean, really, if I didn't they were just going to backstab me again and again."

You expect the AI to play the same throughout the whole game and backstab you repeatedly because it did so at the start. Not sure it's unfair for the AI to think the same of you, in effect.

And I say this as someone who warmongers in Civ VI like crazy because the game drastically favors and rewards it...which I dislike.Balkothhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12425374556730828853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2814591084344141656.post-81673161875545392902016-11-25T04:07:04.922-08:002016-11-25T04:07:04.922-08:00@coppertopper

As to your question, it depends a little ...Thanks!

As to your question, it depends a little on what kind of indie game you want to make. Even a tech stack like RPG Maker can actually let you do some interesting and neat things.

Given my experience with Unity, it's an easy recommendation for me. Unreal also has definite pros, but I am unfamiliar with it as far as day to day use is concerned. Both are available free for hobbyists, so cost is no concern there.

Unity has an excellent set of tutorials to get you started, and a huge community, so it's easy to get into it. I managed to get a small game running start to finish within a month of on and off playing when I first started, before joining FHG on Eon Altar.

I'd hold off on Lumberyard for now; Nobody's been able to articulate what Lumberyard does that Unity/Unreal can't, and Unity/Unreal are way more battle tested. But honestly, for a solo endeavour, unless you're trying to do something cutting edge as far as rendering/physics/whatever techniques are concerned, Unity and/or Unreal are more than sufficient.Talarianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17684944568000522986noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2814591084344141656.post-24319680860276475802016-06-15T16:27:24.719-07:002016-06-15T16:27:24.719-07:00Congrats.
